Journalism Grants to Report on 'Alternative Nobel' Laureates Launched
With shrinking media budgets around the world, many newsworthy stories on real solutions to global challenges are missing out on being reported. More than 160 Laureates of the Right Livelihood Award provide fertile ground for such stories. In 2017, the Right Livelihood Award Foundation is launching a small grant scheme to support impartial and high-quality reporting on the work of ‘Alternative Nobel’ Laureates and, in doing so, put the spotlight on the issues that matter. Remembering Apartheid Critic and Educator Patrick van Rensburg
The Right Livelihood Award Foundation is saddened by the passing of its 1981 Laureate Patrick van Rensburg, an internationally-renowned educator who dedicated his life to social justice and development in southern Africa. In recognition of his efforts, van Rensburg was honoured with the Right Livelihood Award in 1981 “…for developing replicable educational models for the third world majority.” Patrick van Rensburg passed away peacefully in Botswana on 23 May 2017. Read more

Moudeina’s Triumph: Life in Prison for Hissène Habré Confirmed
Leading Chadian lawyer and 2011 Right Livelihood Award Laureate Jacqueline Moudeina celebrated the final conviction of the country’s former dictator Hissène Habré. On 27 April, the Appeals Court in Senegal confirmed the life sentence for Habré for his crimes against humanity. “This is the message we are sending to all dictators and violators of human rights,” said Moudeina, who represented Habré’s victims since 2000. Read more

Maude Barlow Publishes Water for Sale Report
In her latest report Water for Sale, 2005 Right Livelihood Award Laureate Maude Barlow explores how modern free trade and investment agreements impede the ability of people and their governments to maintain environmental laws and regulations to protect their water. She also shows how trade agreements advance the privatisation and commodification of water. Read the full report.

Geneva Students Stand in Solidarity with Cumhuriyet
Students from the Graduate Institute in Geneva expressed their solidarity with 163 journalists who are behind bars in Turkey at an agora held in association with Sorbonne Human Rights Association on 30 May. Speaking at the event, Muratcan Sabuncu, son of the Editor-in-Chief of Turkish independent newspaper Cumhuriyet, which received the Right Livelihood Award in 2016, said: "What happens in Turkey can happen anywhere. This reminds us of the fragility of human rights."  Read more (in French).

Criminalisation of Protest in Brazil
Since the removal of President Dilma Rousseff from office last year, Brazil has seen a growing violence and political persecution of activists. 1991 Right Livelihood Award Laureate Comissão Pastoral da Terra (CPT) reports that 2016 set a new record with the highest number of people, 61, killed in conflicts over land in 13 years. On 25 May, the police clamped down on protesters against the current President Michel Temer in the country's capital, Brasilia, as well as its largest city Rio de Janeiro.
