RLA 2014 Regional Conference, Cairo
From 6 to 9 June, 11 Laureates of the Right Livelihood Award convened at SEKEM’s biodynamic farm (RLA 2003) outside Cairo, Egypt, for the first regional conference of Laureates working in Africa. The conference, made possible with the support of Church of Sweden, brought the Laureates together to share their experience, network and to discuss viable solutions to the most urgent challenges Africa is facing.
As a result of the meeting, the Laureates signed an appeal to the governments of the African Union to develop ecological organic agriculture on the continent. They also called on the Congolese government to cancel the exploration permit of a British oil company in the Virunga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A third petition appealed to the Nigerian government to finally clean up the oil spills in Ogoniland, and to heed the recommendations of the 3 year old UNEP report.
