Roundtable discussion in the Swedish Parliament with four whistleblowers
On June 4th, four American whistleblowers, including 2006 Laureate Daniel Ellsberg, and parliamentarians from five political parties, lawyers, civil society representatives and journalists participated in a roundtable discussion in the Swedish Parliament. The discussion focused on the on-going process within the Council of Europe on strengthening the protection for whistleblowers.
The whistleblowers’ visit to Stockholm took place at a ground-breaking moment. President Obama just signed a bill to overhaul the NSA surveillance programme that has been in place since the terrorist attacks of 9/11. However, theUSA Freedom Act is received critically: “It is just one step on the road to regaining our rights. It is a promising beginning and we have Edward Snowden to thank for that,” Ellsberg told the Guardian.
