当初为何设立此奖?由诺贝尔基金会否决设立环境奖项谈起

1979年,瑞典德国双重国籍的慈善家和集邮家Jakob von Uexküll携同计划书前往诺贝尔基金会,希望增加两个奖项,一个是环境奖,另一个是向落后国家人民推广知识和观点的奖项。为筹集奖金,他出售了价值超过一亿美元的邮票收藏,并把款项捐给诺贝尔基金会。

Jakob von Uexküll深知世界问题的逼切性,可是国际社会往往在处理这些问题时反应甚为迟缓。他看到决策者只管闭门会议,脱离现实。与此同时,社运人士和公民社会正在这些会议室外集会,为问题提供良方,却得不到重视,Jakob von Uexküll希望改变这种情况。

他认为诺贝尔奖的得主会得到世界的注意,故此联络了诺贝尔基金会,但设立两个新奖项的提议,却遭基金会婉拒。因而,Jakob von Uexküll决定设立生活方式楷模奖来支持为公义、和平和可持续发展奋斗的人士。他继续把邮票收藏卖掉,设立奖项便由此开始。生活方式楷模奖1980年首次颁奖时,正是诺贝尔奖颁奖的前一日,因此获得了不少注意。时至今日,此奖已成为推动可持续发展、社会公义与和平工作方面相当具代表性的奖项。

售卖邮票藏品的收入足以发放首届奖金,之后,生活方式楷模奖一直都收到个别善长的资金支持。此奖之独特在于为受威胁的得奖者提供长远支援,并保障以及扩展他们的人际网络。鉴于这段设奖历史,此奖又有”另类诺贝尔奖”之称。

15th Anniversary Conference in Cologne, Germany.

The total number of Laureates reaches 100.

2005

25th Anniversary Conference in Salzburg, Austria.

2006

Ole von Uexküll becomes Executive Director.

2007

Establishment of the Swiss Right Livelihood Award Foundation.

2009 Establishment of the Right Livelihood College on the initiative of 1982 Laureate Anwar Fazal.

30th Anniversary Conference in Bonn, Germany.

Establishment of the protection programme for threatened Laureates.
