當初為何設立此獎?由諾貝爾基金會否決設立環境獎項談起

1979年,瑞典德國雙重國籍的慈善家和集郵家Jakob von Uexküll攜同計劃書前往諾貝爾基金會,希望增加兩個獎項,一個是環境獎,另一個是向落後國家人民推廣知識和觀點的獎項。為籌集獎金,他出售了價值超過一億美元的郵票收藏,並把款項捐給諾貝爾基金會。

Jakob von Uexküll深知世界問題的逼切性,可是國際社會往往在處理這些問題時反應甚為遲緩。他看到決策者只管閉門會議,脫離現實。與此同時,社運人士和公民社會正在這些會議室外集會,為問題提供良方,卻得不到重視,Jakob von Uexküll希望改變這種情況。

他認為諾貝爾獎的得主會得到世界的注意,故此聯絡了諾貝爾基金會,但設立兩個新獎項的提議,卻遭基金會婉拒。因而,Jakob von Uexküll決定設立生活方式楷模獎來支持為公義、和平和可持續發展奮鬥的人士。他繼續把郵票收藏賣掉,設立獎項便由此開始。生活方式楷模獎1980年首次頒獎時,正是諾貝爾獎頒獎的前一日,因此獲得了不少注意。時至今日,此獎已成為推動可持續發展、社會公義與和平工作方面相當具代表性的獎項。

售賣郵票藏品的收入足以發放首屆獎金,之後,生活方式楷模獎一直都收到個別善長的資金支持。此獎之獨特在於為受威脅的得獎者提供長遠支援,並保障以及擴展他們的人際網絡。鑑於這段設獎歷史,此獎又有「另類諾貝爾獎」之稱。

Establishment of the Swiss Right Livelihood Award Foundation.
