Mother Earth Day

The UN General Assembly discussed a holistic approach to sustainable development on April 20 to commemorate International Mother Earth Day.

Vandana Shiva (India, RLA 1993) was one of the panelists, discussing “Ways to promote a holistic approach to sustainable development in harmony with nature”.

She stated that recognizing the rights of Mother Earth had become a survival imperative for humanity. “Earth rights are human rights, they are not separate”.

Maude Barlow (Canada, RLA 2005) emphasized in a Mother Earth Day op-ed the necessity of a Declaration on the Rights of Mother Earth:

“Every now and then in history, the human race takes a collective step forward in its evolution. The earth, and all its inhabitants, urgently needs this to be one of those times.”

Amy Goodman (USA, RLA 2008) interviewed Vandana Shiva (India, RLA 1993) and Maude Barlow (Canada, RLA 2005) about the rights of the earth. Reason was the International Earth Day and the UN General Assembly’s discussion on implementing new international standards for the rights of nature.
