Follow us at the 40th Session of the Human Rights Council
The Right Livelihood Award Foundation is honoured to participate in the 40th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council. This year we will deliver oral statements on the heroic efforts of women human rights defenders and on the recent developments concerning Cumhuriyet. We are also hosting two side events focusing on the worsening plight of women human rights defenders and promoting a call to action for Saudi Arabia. Find more information below.

Parallel to the Human Rights Council, 2018 Right Livelihood Award Laureate Iván Velásquez will be speaking at FIFDH Genève.

Come join us for a solutions-oriented discussion featuring 5 courageous Right Livelihood Award Laureates that have personally documented human rights violations on the ground. Sima Samar, Ruth Manorama, Helen Mack, Mozn Hassan, and Charlotte dos Santos Pruth from Kvinna till Kvinna will lead us on a journey of resistance in India, Egypt, Afghanistan, Guatemala, and other parts of the world, and explore how we can secure better protection for WHRDs across the globe.

Saudi Arabia - Time for Accountability
Join our discussion about the impact of disproportionate counter-terrorism measures on fundamental freedoms in Saudi Arabia. Saudi human rights defenders have been unjustly prosecuted, tortured, ill-treated and arbitrarily detained in recent years. We will also discuss ways to engage the international community, as well as the role of Special Procedures, in ensuring that the Saudi authorities are held to account.

Cumhuriyet Still Behind Bars
A Turkish court has upheld lengthy sentences against journalists and other former staff members of the Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet. The Right Livelihood Award Foundation, which honoured Cumhuriyet with the Award in 2016 for their fearless investigative journalism, condemns the political verdict and calls on Turkish authorities to release all staff members of Cumhuriyet and respect freedom of the press in the country.
