Wangari Maathai (Kenya, RLA 1984)

Poverty and climate change are threatening East Africa’s Mau forest. It supplies an area ten times the size of Denmark with water. Nonetheless, about a third of the forest has been felled over the past ten years.
The University of Copenhagen has just started a partnership with the Wangari Maathai Institute of Peace and Environmental Studies at the University of Nairobi and with Wangari Maathai’s Green Belt Movement, which has planted more than 40 million trees in Kenya. Together they hope to find possibilities for a sustainable balance between the needs of the Kenyans and the forest.
