August 9, 2020, the date of the rigged elections in Belarus, marks the start of a nationwide uprising. Since then, the world has watched demonstrations and local uprisings against what is seen as the last remaining dictatorship in Europe. The government of Belarus has tried to silence the peaceful demonstrations with violent strategies of suppression, such as torture, sexual violence and abductions. Ales Bialiatski and the Human Rights Center “Viasna” have for almost 25 years campaigned for democracy and freedom, and provided support for political prisoners, reporting thousands of arrests since the election. The protestors and human rights defenders witness continuous violations of human rights and fear for their lives and liberty while simply trying to exercise their right to freedom of expression.

The conversation will focus on the threats for human rights defenders in Belarus, the torture political prisoners face and the challenging situation for everyone peacefully fighting the regime in Belarus.
